A major accident on the Bay Bridge created an eastbound traffic nightmare on Thanksgiving Day for travelers in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The crash involved at least six cars and occurred in the Yerba Buena Tunnel near Treasure Island.

At 1:10 p.m. the fire department in San Francisco tweeted that there had been an accident and drivers should “avoid the area and expect delays.”

Twenty minutes later, SFFD sent one update that 18 people had been injured, including eight children, and that four ambulances were called to the scene. Fortunately, none of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

The accident on the Bay Bridge followed an earlier accident on the Carquinez Bridge earlier in the day.

14.00 511 SF Bay, a local traffic service, reported that all lanes had opened but that drivers should still expect “residual delays”.
